Higher Ground was originally started back in 1998 by singer/Songwriter Tim Westerwelle. Tim has always been a huge fan of Jim Morrison and the Doors, you can hear the influence in his songs. The songs are about real life experiences and lessons learned along the musical journey of his life. Through lineup changes due to band members that passed and various other reasons, the music has always persevered. The current lineup is often considered to be the most focused and hardest working of all. Higher Ground Today is Mike Mcgillacutty on Lead Guitar and I might add one of the absolute best guitarists on the Jacksonville circuit today bringing his style of playing the most tasty links to the music! This man is most certainly one of the driving forces of the Higher Ground sound! The rhythm section includes drummer Cm Jones with a driving beat and precise in the pocket playing. On Rhythm guitar is Josh Drulia who has also been a force to reckon with. From melodic strumming and exchanges of hot licks with Mike, he has contributed to the sound that is Higher Ground Today.
Finally, last but certainly not least, we have the incredible playing of the bass by Orrie Flynt who keeps the timing for every one else and always leaves you smiling.
Now the sound itself has been described as Southern Style Punk Rock with a tinge of 70's psychedelic Rock that appeals to a wide demographic of people from 20 year olds to folks in their 60's and beyond.
Higher Ground has a fan base that we lovingly refer to as "The Grounders" and they have been very supportive of us as can be seen by the votes we received in the STAGE 904 poll. Thanks to Drew Atwell and the helping hands he has working with him on the poll. Higher Ground is very grateful and thankful for the support of everyone who helped us win the Band of the Month! Keep Rocking!
